Why does The Edge offer customized mental conditioning services for roller derby athletes and leagues?
The Edge's mental conditioning coach, Torrie Higgins, is better known in the roller derby world as LeBrawn Maimes. For the past four years, she has been skating, coaching and consulting with roller derby leagues across the country, including the Gainesville Roller Rebels and the Jacksonville Rollergirls, and is currently a member of the Rat City Rollergirls All Star Team. Inspired by her love of roller derby and observation that many skaters and leagues struggle with similar performance-related issues, Torrie is excited to offer mental conditioning resources designed to address common challenges that are unique to roller derby (see below) and help skaters build critical mental skills to optimize performance.
What specialized roller derby mental conditioning services are available?
We offer both individual and team roller derby consulting sessions. Skaters/leagues may select from the list of popular topics below or opt to work with our coaches to design a session or workshop tailored to the specific needs of their team.
Our mental conditioning programs are designed to help you:
- Overcome the fear of jamming
- Jam like a boss- How to jam with confidence and control
- Block as a unit - Work on team trust, cohesion, clarifying roles and communication
- Ignore the jammer candy - Focus your attention and become a less reactive blocker
- Return to the track successfully after injury
- Keep your cool - Control your emotions and interact effectively with referees, officials and coaches during the heat of a bout
- Lead your team to victory - Develop a constructive coaching style, motivate your league, improve your practice plans and reduce rostering/playing time conflicts
- Shake your bout day jitters - Manage your energy, attention and anxiety so that you play your best from the first jam whistle to the last
- Resolve intraleague conflicts and foster positive league dynamics
- General mental skills training sessions are also available
Skaters/leagues may select mental conditioning sessions that typically last 60-90 minutes or choose to host a mental conditioning half-day (4 hours) interactive workshop.
If your league is located near Seattle or Snohomish our coaches will conduct mental conditioning sessions at your practice venue free of charge.
